Babe Ruth, also known as "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat," was one of the most famous baseball players in history. Born George Herman Ruth Jr. on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland, he became an iconic figure in American sports.

Ruth began his Major League Baseball career as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in 1914 but gained fame primarily for his hitting prowess. He was known for his exceptional power and ability to hit home runs, a skill that changed the nature of the game. In 1920, he was sold to the New York Yankees, a move that is famously cited as the beginning of the "Curse of the Bambino," which supposedly plagued the Red Sox until they won the World Series in 2004.

During his 22 seasons in the majors, Ruth set numerous records, including the most home runs in a season (60 in 1927) and the most career home runs (714), a record that stood until 1974 when it was broken by Hank Aaron. His career batting average was .342, and he was known for both his hitting and pitching prowess.

Ruth's larger-than-life personality and charisma made him a larger-than-life figure in American culture. He was among the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Babe Ruth passed away on August 16, 1948, but his legacy continues to be celebrated in baseball and American sports history.
