Australia’s most prolific psych-rock shapeshifters, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, are finally heading home—and they’re not coming quietly.

This December, the boundary-pushing band will return for their first Australian shows in over two years, and as you’d expect from a group that’s never done things by halves, this tour is anything but ordinary.

Phantom Island & Two Sides of Gizz

The tour is in support of their latest album, Phantom Island—just one of a staggering number of albums they’ve released in their career. (Fun fact: King Gizz have released over 25 albums since 2012, averaging more than two per year. Try keeping up!)

This time around, fans will get to choose between two totally different live experiences: lush orchestral performances and full-throttle rock 'n' roll shows. Or, if you're a true Gizzhead, you can catch both.

Gizz Meets Orchestra

In a genre-flipping move, four of the upcoming shows will feature orchestral arrangements of their music, conducted by Chad Kelly. These performances will be backed by 29-piece ensembles from some of Australia’s top orchestras:

  • Sydney Opera House – with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
  • Princess Theatre, Brisbane – with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra
  • Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne – with Orchestra Victoria, plus Folk Bitch Trio opening the night

Expect strings, brass, and maybe even a flute or two—after all, frontman Stu Mackenzie is known for his onstage flute solos. (Yep, that’s a thing.)

Turn It Up: The Rock Shows

Prefer your Gizz loud and loose? You're in luck. The band’s rock ‘n’ roll sets will light up the following venues:

  • Fortitude Music Hall, Brisbane – with support from Party Dozen
  • Enmore Theatre, Sydney – also featuring Party Dozen
  • Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne – supported by rising star Barkaa

The Melbourne show at Myer Music Bowl will host both the orchestral and rock shows—and fans can grab a discounted two-night ticket bundle to experience both sides of the Gizzard coin.

Ticket Info

  • Artist pre-sale: Wednesday, May 21st at 10am AEST
  • General public on sale: Friday, May 23rd at 10am AEST

King Gizzard shows sell out fast, so don’t dawdle.

Fun Gizz Facts (Because Why Not?)

  • They once released five albums in a single year (2017), including Polygondwanaland, which was released for free with the invitation for fans to press and sell their own copies. Punk as hell.
  • The band has dabbled in nearly every genre: thrash metal, microtonal tuning, garage rock, jazz fusion, even eco-themed prog.
  • Their name? Inspired by a dream about a giant lizard and their love for King Crimson. (Hence: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.)

Whether you're in it for the strings, the shredding, or just the spectacle, this homecoming tour is one for the books. Don’t miss the chance to see one of Australia’s most inventive bands reinvent themselves—again.

Stay weird, Gizzheads.
