So, you’ve popped into a record store — maybe for the first time, maybe for the thousandth. Either way, welcome! Whether you're here to hunt down that rare first press, flick through some Rockaway $9.99 gems, or just soak up the vibes, there’s a bit of unwritten etiquette we reckon every digger should know.

At Rockaway, we’re not big on rules — but we are big on good vibes. Here’s how to keep the crate-digging experience awesome for everyone.

1. Respect Other Diggers

Crate-digging is practically a sport. Elbows in, gentle flipping, and if someone’s already digging in a section, give ’em space. Wait your turn, and you’ll get your moment in the Bowie bin. Bonus points for not leaving all the records you have just flipped through leaning forward...

2. Chat, Don’t Shout

Record stores are like pubs for music lovers. Want to nerd out about pressing variations or gush over your favourite Misfits B-side? We’re here for it! But keep it conversational level and show respect for your fellow diggers! Bonus points for NOT playing your phone loudly listening to tracks...

3. Don’t Hog the Listening Station

We love that you want to test a stack — that’s why the station’s there. But if there's a queue forming behind you, maybe don’t throw on the albums in full. Try a track or two, get the vibe, and keep things spinning for the next digger in line.

4. Ask Questions – That’s What We’re Here For!

Not sure if your stylus is worn out? Looking for that obscure Japanese pressing of Rubber Soul? Our team lives for this stuff. Seriously, we get a weird thrill from solving musical mysteries. Don’t be shy — we’re here to help, recommend, and occasionally talk your ear off about horror movie soundtracks.

5. Record Stores Are Great for Meeting Humans

In a world of algorithms and auto-play, there’s something special about bonding with a stranger over a shared love of Pixies or swapping stories about your first gig. Say hi. Compliment someone’s tee. You never know — your next best friend (or bandmate?) could be flipping through the same crate. Bonus points for not asking the person next to you to name 3 songs from the band tee they are wearing... [That's super lame, just let people be!]

“There's nothing as glamorous to me as a record store. When I was growing up, it was the most magical place in the world.” - Paul McCartney

6. Don't Be A Music Snob

Sorry peeps... Snobs in the music scene are out.

We’re all about celebrating the joy of music, whatever shape it takes. No judgement. No elitism. Just pure, unfiltered love for sound.

So wear your fandom loud and proud — whether it’s boy bands, black metal, or both. You’re welcome here. Always.

Bonus Tip: Wash Your Hands

Vinyl’s like a cat — it remembers if you treat it badly. Clean hands = clean records = happy turntables. (And if you need proper cleaning gear, we’ve got you covered.)
Please note, it's also considered super bad form to be flicking with drinks and food near the vinyl.. So don't be offended if you are asked to come back when you have finished snacking.

Come for the Records, Stay for the Vibes

At Rockaway, we’ve been spinning since 1992, and we’ve seen it all — from teens discovering Nirvana to grandparents replacing their scratched Elvis in Hawaii. We’re not just a shop. We’re a hangout, a hub, and a bit of a time machine.

So drop in, dig deep, be kind, and don’t forget to say hey.
